CESO; Sending skilled Canadians to advise organizations in developing regions

The CESO model

CESO posts hundreds of volunteers with a broad range of skills to advise international and Canadian aboriginal organizations for a few weeks at a time. CESO volunteers are men and women who have 10+ years of experience in their field. Most are retired, but there are also some working people who take the time to do a volunteer project. CESO maintains a database of applicants that it uses to select people with the right skills for projects that seek their help from time to time.

Nicole Gold, the manager of the CESO describes what CESO does, and the kind of people they are looking for.

Nicole describes how volunteers can become involved with CESO, and what support CESO provides when they are abroad on assignment.

CESO's programs to provide volunteer advisors to aboriginal organizations are in transition because government funding for these programs has recently been significantly reduced. Tom Meecham is Regional Director for Ontario. He outlines how those programs operate today:

Within Canada, CESO's mandate is to provide volunteer advisors who can develop governance and economic capacities in partnership with over 2,000 aboriginal organizations across Canada. The volunteer advisors act as mentors and consultants promoting specialized skills. Tom prefers to send a team that combines a aboriginal and non-aboriginal volunteers to provide on-the-job cross-cultural advice to volunteers who are new to working in a native community.
